A true story.

Look carefully at the B-17 and note how shot up it is – one engine dead, tail, horizontal stabilizer and nose shot up. It was ready to fall out of the sky. (This is a painting done by an artist from the description of both pilots many years later.) Then realise that there is a German ME-109 fighter flying next to it. Now read the story below. I think you’ll be surprised ….

Charlie Brown was a B-17 Flying Fortress pilot with the 379th Bomber Group at Kimbolton, England . His B-17 was called ‘Ye Old Pub’ and was in a terrible state, having been hit by flak and fighters. The compass was damaged and they were flying deeper over enemy territory instead of heading home to Kimbolton. After flying the B-17 over an enemy airfield, a German pilot named Franz Stigler was ordered to take off and shoot down the B-17. When he got near the B-17, he could not believe his eyes. In his words, he ‘had never seen a plane in such a bad state’. The tail and rear section was severely damaged, and the tail gunner wounded. The top gunner was all over the top of the fuselage. The nose was smashed and there were holes everywhere. Despite having ammunition, Franz flew to the side of the B-17 and looked at Charlie Brown, the pilot. Brown was scared and struggling to control his damaged and blood-stained plane.

Aware that they had no idea where they were going, Franz waved at Charlie to turn 180 degrees. Franz escorted and guided the stricken plane to, and slightly over, the North Sea towards England .. He then saluted Charlie Brown and turned away, back to Europe . When Franz landed he told the CO that the plane had been shot down over the sea, and never told the truth to anybody. Charlie Brown and the remains of his crew told all at their briefing, but were ordered never to talk about it. More than 40 years later, Charlie Brown wanted to find the Luftwaffe pilot who saved the crew. After years of research, Franz was found. He had never talked about the incident, not even at post-war reunions. They met in the USA at a 379th Bomber Group reunion, together with 25 people who are alive now – all because Franz never fired his guns that day. (L-R) German Ace Franz Stigler, artist Ernie Boyett, and B-17 pilot Charlie Brown.

When asked why he didn’t shoot them down, Stigler later said, “I didn’t have the heart to finish those brave men. I flew beside them for a long time. They were trying desperately to get home and I was going to let them do that. I could not have shot at them. It would have been the same as shooting at a man in a parachute.” Both men died in 2008. This is a true story!

THIS WAS BACK IN THE DAYS WHEN THERE WAS HONOUR IN BEING A WARRIOR …. THEY PROUDLY WORE UNIFORMS, AND THEY DIDN’T HIDE IN AMBUSH INSIDE A MOSQUE, OR BEHIND WOMEN AND CHILDREN, NOR DID THEY USE MENTALLY RETARDED WOMEN AS SUICIDE BOMBERS TO TARGET AND KILL INNOCENT CIVILIANS .. HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED …….

  1. Hi Kenny,
A really big congratulations for your birthday yesterday well done for making it old son ! Hope you had a brilliant day, and that you have a healthy rewarding year, if any one deserves it you certainly do.
Thanks for visiting, and for your offer of help, when I get a bit more time I will take you up on it.
Sorry I haven’t been round, the heart op that my mum has been waiting for suddenly became vitally important & she was rushed in to hospital to have it done ( a valve replacement- in the scheme of things a mere bagatelle, but large enough for her ) & she’s been there since.
At 80 even a minor op is a big deal, and there were some concerns that she was too frail for it, but she’s got through it ok, and seems to be improving slightly each day.
I’ll keep in touch Kenny, all the best, and once again Happy Birthday dude!
    cheers , Nick 🙂
Ps. This is a truly marvellous story, fantastic that they managed to meet up before it was too late. There aren’t many people of that generation around now, and even less with his honour.

  5. Hi Kenny,

I came across your blog from Dreamwalker’s site. What a pretty blog and I must say, it is surprisingly gorgeous being as though you are male. I love it!

This is a truly awesome story! (Especially since it’s true) Wonderful. Recreating it the way the artist did and seeing the men together made me feel like I was right there when that pilot was so very human.

Thanks for sharing it and very nice to have stopped by your blog.

    • Hi Michelle.
Thank you for your kind words about my page. I have never thought that being a male should inhibit me from expressing myself artistically. Just wanted my page to be a little different from the norm, as I am myself.
I visited your blog and was impressed with your writing. I shall visit again to read more soon.

  7. HI Kenny, this is a wonderful story of bravery and also comrades who also knew that the enemy is not always the ones behind the Guns who are told to do their Job… But they recognised that they were just men carrying out their duty trying to get home to their families that day…
Honour is something I fear we are lacking today.. as is the Respect…

On a different note Kenny I hope that all is going well with yourself.. I send you some energy as always when I visit and Hope you are going strength to strength.. Dreamwalker

I have copied your post on my Office Word 2007 and saved it on my iPad. I read it again and again and again whenever I could. This morning, it is the 48th time that I read that heart touching story.

Franz Stigler and Charlie Brown died in 2008 I read from your post. Please get them in http://www.findagrave.com where they belong for the generations to come.

    Cheers, Kenny. Take care.

Yes, that was “the great generation.” Some warriors (but certainly not all warriors) are puny people now.

    Hugs to you.

  13. These are truly heroic acts,
far greater than is given credit
for I think and honour, whether
friend or foe, proves to us that
    there is a higher understanding,
within the face of death, life was
granted… A very nice story this
