More questions than answers.

Man is by far, the most intelligent animal ever to walk upon the Earth. It is his curiosity, his searching mind,  his inborn thirst for knowledge. that has thrust our species into mind boggling dimensions.   The evolving technological world has gone mad, quantum physics…does anybody really understand what they are dreaming ? Genetics…  what MARVELs within us.  EVOLUTION…  Charles Darwin, top man  ! enough said.

So Man has evolved into who/what we are today, by simply asking questions and learning the answers.  Children will ask “why” !  a thousand times a day, driving their parents up the wall. Obviously these early displays of curiosity should never be discouraged.

In fact I was encouraged by my mother to ask questions.   So I am today,  asking a question  and the question is  ” DOES THE MOON ROTATE.” ?

Does the Moon rotate on its axis?

The Moon is familiar; it always looks the same. We know that the Earth rotates, that’s why the Sun, Moon and stars seem to move through the sky every day. But does the Moon rotate? And if the Moon rotates, why do we alway see the same side – it never seems to change.

Well, the Moon does rotate. In fact, the Moon takes 27.3 days to turn once on its axis. But the Moon also takes 27.3 days to complete one orbit around the Earth. Because the Moon’s rotation time is exactly the same amount of time it takes to complete an orbit, it always presents the same face to the Earth, and one face away.

Because it only presents one face to the Earth, astronomers say that the Moon is tidally locked to the Earth. Although the Moon looks like a perfectly smooth ball, it has slight differences in the shape of its gravity field. A long time ago, the Moon did rotate. But each time it turned, the Earth’s gravity tugged at it, slowing down its rotation until it only presented one face to the Earth. At that point, the Moon was tidally locked, and from our perspective, it DOESN’T seem to rotate.

  1. Lovely post, Kenny, pictures, philosophy, everything. I do wonder whether we are the most intelligent – is it perhaps because we define intelligence to encompass our particular skills, i.e. language, etc.? Could we find our way thousands of miles in the dark across continents? (Peeing along the way?)

    • When compared to a Gorilla we are all intelligent. In fact we are so clever it frightens me.
True there exists a connotation between “intellect” and “special skills”. But to say that a
person is intelligent because he has the ability to ride a bike, is wrong. However if you were to say,
that person is intelligent because, he can understand the most complex of problems, and SOLVE them !!!
then you would be right. But I may be wrong 🙂

I take it you are referring to migratory birds etc, in your last question. If so then, yes i agree. For a flimsy little bird to fly 14,000 miles without asking for directions. Has always puzzled me.

  4. You have the asking of questions down to a fine art Kenny! Straight and direct and right to the point…no mincing of words lol…Your mother did a good job of “encouraging” you 😀 Now I have a question for you…your flashing gem thingies are making my laptop crash…what are you going to do about it???!!! 😉 Timid one!

      • Kenny!!! You are being very gnawti now 🙂 My laptop is not at all keen on your desire to flash 😀 😉 It is very cheeky of you to defy the Alpha Female of the Europa Pack with your flashing gems! If you are not very careful I shall be speeding my way over there to give you “what for!” lol 😉 Now do try to behave yourself for once in the presence of your Alpha!!! 😀 Timid one 🙂

        • My flashing gem’s are the equivalent of your flashing eyes OH Alpha one. “cheeky” “gnawty” “defying” ….YEP that sounds like me 🙂 But I shall endeavour to control my gnawtiness and any other idiosyncrasies that you may discover about me. Did i ever tell you about my adventure up the mato grosso !!! I was on the track of unknowen animals. I learned a great deal about myself during that experience. 🙂

          • I’m sure you did learn a great deal about yourself Kenny…all very cheeky and gnawti no doubt 😉 Did you find the entrance to the centre of the Earth by any chance?…or did the Earth move before you got there?!! I don’t think you’re very good at controlling your gnawtiness or your cheekiness so I won’t hold my breath on that one lol but as your flashing gems have thoroughly upset my laptop and crashed it twice tonight already 😉 I think it is high time you stopped being so defiant and got to grips with the fine art of submitting to your Alpha!! 😀
Timid one :)… snootily dusting off paws!

            • ‘submit’ ME…. never !!! lol But i shall be keeping my eyes on my flashing gems, and guarding them with golden bullets !!! just in case 🙂
hope you are keeping well Timid one.

              • I see…no submitting…!! So Golden Bullets wants to play the rebellious Alpha Male? 😀 Really?…well, well, well…! Hmm…Yes well…we will see!! 😉
I am keeping very well thank you – seeing as I am not actually on your page right now so therefore do not have the misfortune to have to contend with your flashing gems! Those golden bullets will need to firing out of a double barrelled golden shotgun shooting on both cylinders if you hope to keep them safe!! I trust you are also warm and well and polishing your golden bullets!!!! 😀 Timid one 🙂

You are now making it almost impossible to navigate to your comment box!!! You’re also providing me the perfect excuse to upgrade my laptop in the New Year for a Windows 8 one with a much more powerful processor! lol 😉 It will need one to cope with your site!! Timid one 😀

And are you trying to tell me you don’t know how to dispose of it now it’s here?!! Oh Wolf! I rely on your blog’s good will towards a wolf with a long history of padding through it then! HooOOOOOOoooooWWWWWWWwwwwLLLLLLLLL 😀 Hmm…that didn’t work either! It’s still creeping despite my blood curdling creepy crawly zapping howl 😉 Don’t turn the snow off! I like the big fluffy snowflakes and I have them on mine too 🙂 But I do not like my close encounters with your spider!! lol…Trembling, wide-eyed Timid one!! 🙂

Please DON’T get Windows 8 without taking advice first – It has been specifically designed for the new generation of touch screen computers and as we discovered when my daughter was looking for a new lappie for Uni it does not work at well with a keyboard operated machine. xx

      • I have absolutely no idea? I haven’t been in FB or Twitter much recently because I’m directing the village pantomime and have been doing some public reading which haven’t left time for anything else. Oddly enough the system signed me out of MSN about half an hour ago telling me I had logged in on another computer so perhaps time to change some passwords again
